30th edition of CSIL Report ‘The European market for kitchen furniture’ offers an accurate comprehensive picture of the kitchen furniture industry in 30 EU countries, providing data and 2014-2019 trends (both in value and in volume) in kitchen furniture production and consumption, imports and exports, at European level as a whole and for each country considered, for the total sector and by six price range groups. Marketing policies, the main macroeconomic indicators necessary to analyse the performance of the sector for the last six years and forecasts for the years 2020-2023, an analysis of the supply structure and the competitive system, and an overview of the distribution system are also provided. The value and weight of the built-in appliances on the domestic sales of kitchen furniture are considered, too.


It is the first year that this Report covers all the 30 EU countries:

Austria, Belgium-Luxembourg, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom (Europe 17, formerly Europe Part I), Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia (Europe 13, formerly Europe Part II).


Kitchen furniture imports and exports in the 30 European countries considered, broken down by country and by geographical area of destination/origin. The time frame considered is 2014-2019.

An overview of international trade of selected household appliances for the last three years is also provided for each European country considered.


A financial analysis is based on a sample of around 250 selected European manufacturing companies that produce mostly kitchens, and includes profitability ratios (EBITDA, EBIT, ROI, ROE), structure ratios, employment data and ratios per employees.


An analysis of the types of product manufactured by the European kitchen furniture companies and information on key players operating in each segment. Kitchen furniture production is broken down according to:

  • cabinet door material (solid wood, veneer, laminated, decorative papers, thermoplastic foils, lacquered, melamine, aluminium, glass)
  • cabinet door style (classic, rustic, modern, design, hi-tech)
  • cabinet door colour (white, bright colours, neutral colours, wood looking) and lacquered type (high gloss, opaque)
  • worktop material (solid surface, stone, quartz, laminated, ceramic slabs, steel and aluminium, wood, glass)
  • type of lay-out ice range, shape, size, type).

European kitchen furniture production (30 EU countries) amounts to around 7.3 million units manufactured, for a market value (at factory price) of about Eur 16.6 billion (a 2.4% increase in comparison to 2018, +1.8% in terms of quantities).

A growth in the middle end of the market is registered, as well a stability in the lower end as well as a reduction in the upper end.

Approximately 15% of the company turnover (at least in their domestic markets) is made by built-in appliances.

Growing brands in the market include Boffi, Eggo, Fournier, Howdens, Ikea, Lube, Nobilia, Schmidt, Schueller, Turi, Veneta, Wren.

The major European exporting country is by far Germany (2.1 billion Eur) followed by Italy (Eur 0.8 billion), Denmark, Spain and Poland.

Out of the Eur 2.6 billion of imported kitchens, the main European importing market is France (Eur 560 million), followed by Netherlands (430 million Eur) and Switzerland (Eur 300 million).
