MENA area. Lighting fixtures consumption positioning by country

The lighting fixtures market in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is currently estimated by CSIL worth US$ 3.2 billion, with positive expectations for 2018 and 2019. Despite these positive expectations, the whole area remains challenging with tough competition and focus on price. Political and economic instabilities are among the key challenges the region is currently facing.

The Region is a big importer of lighting fixtures (around US$ 2.2 billion, equal to 71% of the total consumption). Exports showed a relevant growth over the last two years and currently worth US$ 426 million (32% of the total production).

Competition is highly fragmented. Local manufacturers or importers compete in the medium price segment. All largest international brands are present in the area, especially the Italian and European companies, which dominate in the high end market segment. Asian companies have been progressively increasing in the last years and some of the major manufacturers achieved relevant market share in the region.

LED share on total lighting market in the MENA region is around 35% in 2017 and CSIL estimates that it will reach 53% in 2021. LED lighting market growth will be close to +15% per year. 50 leading players analysed cover a share of almost 90% of the market.

Despite the MENA region is still a project-based market, the retail channel is progressively expanding and it is expected to improve its relevance in the coming years. Huge opportunities for lighting distribution come from the e-commerce; among the startups examples in the region there is the recent acquisition of Souq, an e-commerce player that got acquired by Amazon.
