Cells contain biomolecules such as proteins or nucleic acids, which are present in the cytoplasm enclosed within a membrane. Cell free protein expression is a process, which require biomolecular translation machinery extracted from cells to produce recombinant proteins. Cell-free protein expression can be accomplished with different cell extracts such as rabbit reticulocytes, E. coli (prokaryotic), wheat germs (eukaryotes), and insect cells. It offers various features and advantages as compared to conventional in vivo methods. The first types of lysates developed for cell-free protein expression were derived from prokaryotic organisms. In recent past, systems based on extracts from insect cells, mammalian cells, and human cells have been developed and made available commercially, which is expected to drive growth of the market during the forecast period.
