The Philippine economy continues to perform well. It was among the best performing countries in the Asia Pacific region during 2019. according to the IMF, Philippine economic growth regained momentum in the second half of 2019, following a brief slowdown in the first half of the year. Nevertheless, GDP growth for 2019 was around 5.7% for the full year, which was slower than the previous year but a positive development if compared to most countries in South East Asia.
In 2019, positive growth was recorded in the overall Philippines water heater market. However, sales were slower than the previous year. The market was mainly driven by increased demand resulting from new housing projects, an overall healthy economy, and positive market sentiment among the household consumers. The sales of both electric instantaneous water heaters as well as electric storage continued to move on a positive trajectory. The year 2019 witnessed a positive development in the evacuated tube collector segment of the solar thermal market due to greater demand from residential sector. The flat plate collector market also witnessed positive growth, due to an overall growth in construction activity. Like the previous year, both retail and project sales continued to remain robust in 2019, positively affecting the demand for AC products throughout the year. Favourable economic conditions and growth in disposable income accompanied by overall growth in private spending have supported the growth in sales. Although window units still account for the majority of total RAC sales, sales of mini-splits have been growing at a higher rate. There has also been a rise in multi-split sales featuring VRF technology because of growing consumer awareness about their higher savings in the long term. Rapid growth in public construction and government projects has given a boost to the sales of commercial air conditioning like chillers, air handling units, and even commercial VRFs.
