The European bathroom market is considered a mature market, which experienced solid growth rates during the early to mid-2000s. However, demand for almost all bathroom products declined strongly in Europe following the effects of the economic crisis of 2008/2009. The bathroom market recovered significantly faster in Eastern Europe than in Western Europe, with the latter continuing to show drop in sales demand up to 2015.Indeed, the Eastern European market never suffered the dramatic decline in sales compared to Western Europe.

Throughout 2017, demand for bathroom and kitchen equipment continued to increase further, but overall growth slowed down due a number of important countries witnessing reduced growth rates, including the UK, Germany, Russia and Poland. That being said, growth rates accelerated in Spain and Italy, following the dramatic declines seen during the height of the crisis. Housing RMI demand continued to be the main market drivers, although new build demand positively affected growth rates in Spain, Netherlands and the UK. Indeed, demand for bathroom equipment is nowadays mostly driven by replacement demand, although this is different per product group as well as per country. The housing RMI sector developed favorably across both regions, Eastern and Western Europe, during 2017.
