Vacuums are used in passenger cars for actuation, changing gear and pneumatic power assistance. Vacuum pumps are used in cars in which the necessary vacuum cannot be generated in the intake manifold. These are direct injection engines, turbo engines and engines with variable valve timing, for example.
In some applications, vacuum pumps also deliver non-braking functions such as actuation for variable-geometry turbochargers. Diesel or gasoline engines alike, more and more vehicles today depend on specific vacuum pumps. These pumps generate the vacuum needed for boosting brake performance, vacuum which is also required for controlling actuators and for exhaust gas recirculation. In most cases, vacuum pumps are located directly on the cylinder head and are driven by the camshaft.
