Shape memory alloys are alloys that, when distorted, return to their original shape. These alloys are lightweight and can be used instead of traditional actuators including pneumatic, motor-driven, and hydraulic systems. Copper-zinc-aluminium, iron-manganese-silicon, and copper-aluminum-nickel alloys are some of the other shape memory alloys. Shape memory alloys feature two stable phases: austenite, which is stable at high temperatures, and martensite, which is stable at low temperatures.
