ABI Research coined the concept “UnTelco” to define the activities, strategies, and opportunities that Mobile Service Providers (MSPs) should pursue beyond their traditional offerings to foster revenue growth. This report provides an in-depth look at MSPs' strategies and initiatives undertaken in order to move beyond legacy structures and to seize current and future UnTelco opportunities. It further discusses how different MSPs are approaching these various platforms, provides case studies, and derives lessons that can be learned from the experiences of other MSPs.

Platforms must be interpreted in the wider sense of initiatives aimed at creating new capabilities, opportunities, etc. The report identifies five main macro areas or platforms that MSPs must develop to remain competitive in the market: a technology platform, a restructuring platform, an ecosystem and partnership platform, a go-to-market platform, and a Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) platform. This report presents and analyses initiatives by MSPs, including, among others, AT&T, Telefonica, NTT DOCOMO, Turkcell, Veon, Rostelecom, Orange, and Vodafone. It provides a mix of technology and business analysis, including software and cloud-driven concepts that telcos aim to deploy to implement UnTelco business models. Technologies and topics include the cloudification of the network and AI, the creation of a digital customer, the role of partnerships in the new Technology, Media, and Telecommunications (TMT) market, and the role of digital services to create new revenue.
