The objective of managing device and user identities is one of the most perplexing challenges for the emerging IoT landscape. In most cases, the Identity of Things (IDoT) is falsely established as an arbitrary concept that primarily deals with rudimentary device management solutions involving basic Information and Access Management (IAM) principles and stretched in order to fit the blueprint of a larger HTTP-enabled ecosystem. This report addresses these conceptualization challenges and delves into IoT Thing Identity and Management services providing both a current, tangible understanding of its underlying mechanisms as well as a future-looking approach and market forecasts for all major IoT verticals: from industrial and automotive to smart cities and agriculture.
ABI Research investigates Thing Identity and Management Services with three vital objectives in mind: device management, securing communications, and data exchange. The analysis originates at the very core of the value chain (i.e. embedding digital certificates at the manufacturing phase, private and PKI encryption processes) and expands to include, among others: REST and MQTT APIs and cloud services, gateway-specific solutions, device certificate management, the evolution towards the user-device-system ‘IoT singularity', Open IoT Frameworks (e.g. OCF, oneM2M), finding value in cross-ecosystem implementations, Physical Web & Beacon Identities as well as technical and market recommendations specifically tailored for Smart Cities and the Smart Home.
