Exoskeletons are mechanical devices or soft materials worn by a patient/operator, whose structure mirrors the skeletal structure of the operator's limbs (joints, muscles, etc.), works in tandem with them, and is utilized as a capabilities amplifier, assistive device, haptic controller, or for rehabilitation. Until quite recently, exoskeleton research and commercialization efforts were focused on the defense and medical rehabilitation sectors, or as mobility aids allowing paraplegics to stand upright, walk, and climb stairs. Exoskeleton technology designed to support manufacturing is now becoming commercially available, with research ongoing and more products coming. But many other industries and commercial activities could also benefit from exoskeleton technology, including any task that requires repetitive lifting, extended standing, and distance walking such as those performed by construction workers, surgeons, farm laborers, and more.
This report provides a taxonomic breakdown of the wearable exoskeleton marketplace including user and purchaser profiles, key markets, drivers/challenges, and more. Market data describing exoskeleton adoption is provided, but perhaps more importantly, projections for the worldwide TAM for different classes of commercial exoskeletons are also given, along with examples of 19 types of exoskeleton products/platforms.
