U.S. Wireless Spending

Subscriber growth will no longer drive revenue for wireless carriers as it had in the past. Consequently, revenue gains must increasingly come from higher rates to existing subscribers. In a competitive market, it is difficult to raise rates without offering value-added services. Voice and text messaging are no longer growing, but there is a huge demand for data applications, and subscribers are willing to pay a premium for more data.

LTE networks that can accommodate more data were launched in 2012 and significantly expanded in 2013. LTE-enabled smartphones were introduced in 2012 and became the dominant handset in 2013. The LTE-enabled smartphones sold in 2013 used 40 percent more data than the 3G smartphones sold in 2012. Carriers are now providing unlimited voice and text and are offering tiered data packages where subscribers pay more for larger data allocations, which in turn has led to faster growth in spending per subscriber. The average subscriber paid $50.35 per month in 2013, a 5.0 percent increase from 2012 and the largest gain over the past three years. Prior to 2011, wireless prices were generally declining.

For the first time in 2013, increased spending per subscriber contributed more to overall spending growth than subscriber growth. We expect increases in spending per subscriber to continue to be the principal driver during the next four years. We estimate average monthly spending per subscriber will increase to $59.75 by 2017, growing at a compound annual rate of 4.4 percent.

With the number of subscribers projected to increase at a compound annual rate of 2.5 percent, we estimate that spending on wireless transport services will grow 6.9 percent compounded annually, reaching $263.1 billion in 2017 from $201.2 billion in 2013.
