The commercial / embedded segment is a slow changing segment with highly specialized designs that will be employed for long periods compared to the client segment. Although, this has resulted in lower volumes and slower growth, new opportunities especially in the Internet of Things (IoT) that are being created from emerging and existing applications (automotive, medical, telecommunications, industrial/retail, consumer/connected home, and aerospace/military) that are rapidly transforming this market segment.

Traditionally, other storage options have been heavily utilized in this segment such as Embedded Flash Drives (eMMC, UFS, iNAND) and Compact Flash, which are used for its lower cost, performance, lower capacity requirements and board level integration for special purpose designs. SSD adoption rates are now increasing in this segment as SSD prices continue to decline. This is providing a bright spot for SSD's particularly SSD modules for their small form factors and performance attributes.

SSDs in industrial and embedded applications must meet special environmental conditions to operate reliably. This segment has a wide range of applications covering; agriculture, power, transportation, auto, steel, chemical, oil, coal, and nuclear, to name a few. In each of these industries, reliable storage is needed for data acquisition, measurements, and control. Each of these industries have their unique set of environmental requirements. There are a number of other platforms in the commercial sector that include; lottery machines, digital signage, pachinko machines, ATM hotel concierge, voting machines, industrial PCs, IP media phone, printer, scanner, infotainment for automobile, planes and trains, handheld ultrasound, education terminals, wearable PC, car telematics/infotainment and a host of others. The storage choice will depend on the requirements of storage capacity, performance and cost. SSDs designed for this segment must be able to meet most of these requirements (environmental) if they are to be classified as SSDs for industrial / embedded applications.

WFR has done an in-depth analysis on the market opportunity in the Commercial / Embedded Segment. This analysis covers six major application areas consisting of:

Methodology in Developing the Commercial /Embedded Solid State Storage (SSS) for SSDs and Flash Cards

This SSD report is built around the six sub-markets: Networking/Telecom, Connected Home, Automotive, Industrial/Retail, Medical, and Avionics/Aerospace/Military. Within each sub-market there are multiple applications that are forecast by their overall application units and then the attachment rates for Solid State Storage ( Flash Cards, Embedded Flash Drives, and SSDs) are provided more granularity of the storage requirements for each embedded/commercial application. Since SSDs are a part of SSS, the attachment rates for SSDs are shown to calculate only the SSD units. Once the SSD units are calculated for each application they are summarized for the sub-market and then the form factors (3.5", 2.5", 1.8" and modules)
