Abstract

1. Executive Summary

This is an exciting time in the rich media conferencing and collaboration industry. The advent of High Definition (HD) video conferencing, telepresence, and unified communications (UC) solutions has enterprise customers excited about what can be accomplished with remote collaboration. Web and video collaboration are being considered in strategic initiatives for travel reduction, carbon reduction, and flexible employment programs. Major IT and networking companies like Cisco and Microsoft are placing rich media communications at the center of enterprise productivity applications. At no other time in the history of the industry has there been such a propitious confluence of new solutions, customer demand, and marketing muscle.

China is also at a crossroads. The last twenty years have seen a predominantly rural nation become a global manufacturing center and enter into the information age. At the same time, we have seen the private sector grow to account for over half of the country' s gross domestic product (GDP). This report considers the way that these trends are playing out within the Chinese market for rich media conferencing solutions.

Some of the questions addressed include:

  • Who uses rich media conferencing and collaboration solutions and how the applications are being used?
  • How does the government investment in rural information and communications technologies (ICT) affect the industry?
  • Which vendors are positioned to take advantage of Olympic opportunities in 2008?
  • Can HD and telepresence products sell in China, or is China strictly a low-end market?
  • How is the UC message being received in China?
  • Who are the major Chinese companies in the industry and what types of product do they offer?
  • What role are service providers playing in conferencing and collaboration?

Included in this report is an analysis of the major visual communications market and technology trends in China as well as a review of the Chinese value chain and sales cycle. The report also profiles the top 15 vendors, provides an analysis of their China market strategies, and ends with a detailed five-year forecast for videoconferencing endpoints and MCUs as well as web conferencing clientserver solutions in mainland China (not including Taiwan or Hong Kong).

Methodology

Wainhouse Research monitors the entire rich media conferencing market through its consulting, seminar, and conference activities, as well as by maintaining continuous contacts with the vendor and end user communities. In order to assess the current state of the market and to ground the forecast figures of this report, we also interviewed and collected data from over twenty suppliers.

Our data collection process maps supplier unit and revenue shipments into four product categories:

  • 1) Video MCUs: Devices that enable multipoint video calls over IP and switched networks.
  • 2) Other videoconferencing infrastructure including IP to ISDN gateways, 3G gateways, video gatekeepers, and scheduling and management software.
  • 3) Video/Web Client-Server products: Software that enables web-based collaboration and remote presentations. Generally includes IP audio and video.
  • 4) Group Conferencing Endpoints: Client software and/or hardware located at user sites which captures and transmits audio and video data in a group setting.

Vendors Covered in this Report

Wainhouse Research has done extensive research on the conferencing equipment suppliers and their products. Each supplier is treated separately with a profile and strategy analysis. A comparative matrix listing products for each vendor is included in the appendix.

The following companies are reviewed in detail.

  • Aethra
  • Amplesky
  • AVCON
  • DVISION
  • Kedacom
  • LifeSize
  • Huawei
  • Polycom
  • Radfort
  • RADVISION
  • TANDBERG
  • Sony
  • V2
  • ZONE IP/ Emblaze VCON

Forecast Summary

The Chinese visual communications solutions market is going through a period of rapid growth as government and enterprise investment in information and communications technologies (ICT) moves from tier 1 cities to the many local offices of the provinces and townships. We expect to see rapid growth in unit sales during the forecast period. New high-definition products will also help to keep revenues strong in the near-term. We expect more aggressive pricing to come into play toward the end of the forecast period, resulting in a five-year compound annual growth rate of 14%. Complete forecast details including specific market segment sizes and growth rates can be found in chapter 5 of this report.
