Executive Summary
Companies of all types and sizes are acknowledging the competitive need to
streamline the flow of knowledge and information worker expertise within the

Unified communications is an emerging market, fragmented in definition as well
as in functionality. We define a unified communications system as one that
includes elements of presence, instant messaging, voice and/or voice
conferencing, web or data collaboration, unified messaging, mobility, and/or
video conferencing.
This report focuses on the telephony market because voice is a key
business-enabling technology and many telephony vendors offer unified
communications applications that tightly integrate with their PBX solutions.
