DETAILED OVERVIEW:
As part of its Merchant Computer Boards for Embedded and Real-Time
Applications Market Intelligence Program 2008, VDC Research Group (VDC) is
pleased to announce the release of a study that comprises an examination of
the present and future markets for Stackable computer boards.
The research includes quantitative data that includes current market sizes and
forecasts through the year 2012 for form factors such as the PC/104 family,
EBX, and EPIC as well as analysis and strategic recommendations for the same
markets. Important trends analyzed include the impact of PC/104 family
products utilizing PCI-Express, the expected effect on the overall stackables
market from the delayed development of these same PCI-Express products, the
continued commoditization of the embedded boards industry, and many more.
Research Highlights
Actual year 2007 Stackables dollar volume shipments, US$ 505.4 million, were
only US$ 1.7 million below the US$ 507.1 million projected in VDC' s most
recent previous Stackables study. However, actual year 2007 dollar shipments
of PC/104 family stackables were less than had been projected and shipments of
“Other” (Non-PC/104 Family) stackables were greater than had been
projected.
The slower-than-expected growths of PC/104 Family module shipments may be, at
least in part, due to a delay in the release of a standard covering use of PCI
Express as a module-to-module interconnect. This delay may have slowed PC/104
growth in high end applications over the past two years. Ultimately, the
PC/104 Embedded Consortium issued a set of specifications generically called
PCI/104-Express (including PCI/104-Express and PCIe/104), while a new body,
SFF-SIG, issued a somewhat different standard called Express104. Both have the
potential for success.
