The manufacturing sector is undergoing massive transformation as organizations look to counter their most pressing challenges. According to a recent 2015 survey by VDC Research, some of the greatest issues facing manufacturing organizations included old infrastructure, workforce transition and the aging workforce and overall worker productivity and safety. This is particularly true for workers operating in hazardous environments who have traditionally relied on paper-based or manual processes to support workflows. The high cost of mobile solutions designed to operate in these environments, functionality limitations of available solutions, gaps in product portfolios and organizational issues have all contributed to investment barriers and slow adoption in the past. However, based on research conducted by VDC we anticipate many of these barriers being overcome opening up investment opportunity and driving technology adoption.
Aligning technology investments to elevate workforce performance, ensure complete asset visibility and control and to better empower customers will represent a key opportunity for manufacturing organizations. From mobile workforce management and inspection applications, innovative data analytics applications, and smart calibration solutions, mobile technology investments by manufacturing organizations are far-reaching and will pave the way for how organizations will operate. From a workforce optimization perspective, investments in mobile computing and communications solutions that enable a more connected enterprise will help counter many of the workforce challenges confronting manufacturers today. This is especially true for hazardous environments which have mostly been designed as dark or disconnected to avoid the risk of explosion.
