Businesses continue to be drawn to mobile applications as they look for inventive ways to minimize costs while simultaneously improving communication and collaboration across their organizations. Mobile enabling a workforce can bring immediate productivity gains, but streamlining workflows using mobile applications remains a complex and challenging endeavor particularly when considering the lack of in-house mobile development talent that is the norm in even the most progressive large enterprises. The stakes are high, as the costs associated with developing and deploying mobile applications are significant. Additionally, determining which solution(s) is the most appropriate is increasingly difficult due to the wide variety of options available. Unfortunately, these obstacles make implementing and maintaining mobile applications a significant undertaking, as many complexities persist long after the initial development and launch of an application, and - if not mitigated - risk substantially reducing ROI.

Developing mobile applications for a single platform is proving to be a significant enough challenge for most organizations - BYOD trends have added even more complexity. Going forward, internal development teams must not only be capable of using multiple development environments, but find themselves having to deal with varied programming models and testing frameworks. Maintaining these solutions is not only a challenge but frequently consists of disjointed combinations of legacy software, which are unable to address all of the nuances and requirements of today's fast-moving mobile landscape and results in both time and cost redundancies. For these reasons, vendors must deliver well-integrated, standards-based solutions to the market that address customer concerns of vendor lock-in and provide future-proofing of solutions and new hybrid techniques. VDC expects aggressive adoption of mobile application development platforms in organizations both large and small worldwide, as the appetite for mobile applications continues to grow in enterprise deployment environments.
