This report is written for those responsible for making critical decisions regarding product, market, channel, and competitive strategy and tactics in addressing field mobile - including field service and sales - solutions. It includes market sizing including by hardware, professional services, and software, end-user requirements analysis, and overall market trends.
Field mobility solutions are becoming more complex to develop and manage because of rapidly changing preferences for device types, applications, and operating systems. Traditional solution architectures featuring rugged Windows-based computers running one or two applications are being relegated to a small percentage of the overall market. Enterprises are eager to run more field mobility solutions from smartphones and tablets and are using Web apps as an enabling technology. The transition to multiple-device, multiple-application, and multiple-OS environments is creating a significant need and market opportunity for mobility services, which are projected to grow at a higher rate than both field mobility hardware and software combined.

Exhibit 1: Global mobile hardware, software, and
services revenue in field mobility (US $M)
The consumerization of IT is accelerating in the field mobility market, where smartphones and tablets will dominate future deployments at the expense of notebook and rugged handheld computers that have often been used in the past. In 2017, four out of every five devices deployed to support a field mobility project will either be a smartphone or a tablet, while ruggedized handhelds will account for just X percent of new deployed devices. The value proposition of ruggedized devices outside of highly specialized environments is being increasingly challenged as more ergonomic and user-friendly consumer devices equipped with accessories and protective cases are displacing more expensive rugged devices. Rugged vendors have been slow to respond to this threat and are only beginning to adapt their portfolios to better meet the sensibilities of today's end user.
Exhibit 2: Unit shipments of smartphones, tablet and
notebook computers for field mobility
The increasing buyer preference for consumer-type devices, where many manufacturers compete, will keep price pressure on manufacturers and will hold down spending growth. Hardware revenues in the field mobility market will increase X.X percent between 2012 and 2017, compared to X.X percent for software and X.X percent for services. However, annual unit growth is forecast to approach XX%, illustrating the shifting landscape. The growing need for organizations to create a consistent and secure user experience across the expanding portfolios of devices, operating systems, and applications they are supporting is a strong driver behind software and services spending.
