目錄

The transformation of mobile solutions has been one of the more dramatic in the history of technology. With the number and variety of mobile devices used to conduct business growing at an exponential rate, application development tools that can reduce development time while simplifying the process will be critical as demand for custom applications increases. For the enterprise, the correct mobile strategy can boost profits and productivity and improve customer relations and service. However, developing mobile applications for even a single platform is a significant challenge due to the rapid cadence of OS and hardware iteration. BYOD trends are adding even more complexity for organizations. Companies must contend with issues such as time to market; architectural, performance, and functional considerations; internal, customer, and competitive requirements; and deal with the risks that come with mobile enablement due to security and compliance issues. Development teams typically must be capable of using multiple development environments, each having a different programming model and testing framework. This forces organizations to recruit and retain expanded development and QA teams with different skill sets (in order to support multiple platforms) and acquire multiple tools for each part of the mobile application lifecycle. Maintaining these solutions is not only a challenge but frequently consists of disjointed combinations of legacy software that are unable to address all of the nuances and requirements of today's fast-moving mobile landscape and results in both time and cost redundancies.

For these reasons, vendors must deliver well-integrated standards-based solutions to the market that address customers concerns of vendor lock-in and offer the security, user experience, and scalability required to support the growing mobile application appetite we expect in enterprise deployment environments.

What questions are addressed

  • How large is the mobile development platform and tools market
  • How is the mobile development platform and tools ecosystem evolving
  • Who will enterprises turn to for their mobile development needs
  • How are large and established vendors impacting the market
  • How are vendors addressing security requirements
  • Which vendors are best positioned for success

Who should read this report

This report is for written for a diverse audience. Decision-makers across an organization can benefit from reading it. Anyone participating directly or indirectly in either the development, marketing, or distribution of solutions that enhance application development processes is a suitable audience.

Executive Summary

With the acceptance of smartphones and tablets as viable computing platforms increasing, organizations that fail to ensure their business is participating in the app economy will miss key opportunities to empower their workforce and engage with customers and partners. Mobile applications will be impossible to ignore and require investments in application development platforms and tools for efficient delivery of new applications expected by the market. In 2011, legendary venture capitalist and entrepreneur Marc Andreessen proclaimed that, “software is eating the world.” We agree and see the steady appetite for mobile applications fueling high growth for mobile application development platform and tool vendors.

Companies now realize the potential value mobile applications can bring to different lines of business - as productivity tools for employees and as engagement channels facing customers. However, choosing a development approach for these applications, namely native, web, or hybrid, entails many parameters such as budget, project timeframe, target audience, and application functionality. Finding the approach that best addresses the unique needs of each project is becoming increasingly challenging. Additionally, application lifecycle management (ALM) tools have become a requirement for enterprises with established development teams to effectively manage their software development environments. Expanding mobile application deployments will only exacerbate the need for integrated ALM capabilities that can promote sustainable application development and deliver key capabilities around design, testing, and ongoing monitoring and support.

While solutions that simplify the mobile application development process continue to emerge, the variety of approaches continues to evolve, making identifying the most appropriate solution difficult for prospective customers. While powerful development tools that cater to front-end developers continue to emerge, many lack the backend integration capabilities that enterprise deployment environments require. Vendors that can deliver a holistic solution that can bridge this divide will be well positioned for success in this market.

Key Findings

  • The mobile application platform and tool market will grow to a $X.XB market by 2018 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of XX.X%.
  • Mobile enablement will require enterprises to evolve their use of application programming interfaces (API) technology to re-invent future interactions with customers and partners.
  • Tools to develop sustainable applications are the second-most desired technology feature that enterprises want from their mobile development vendor partner.
  • Recent security breaches are forcing organizations to recognize that they need to employ additional protections to ensure their devices and infrastructure is secure - well-integrated development platforms should figure prominently.
  • Mobile application governance will be essential for organizations to mitigate risk and maximize the value of IT for the business.

Exhibit 1:
Global Shipments for Mobile Application Development Software/Tools ($US M)

The global software shipments of mobile application development platforms and tools will reach $XXXM in 2014 and grow to a $X.XB market by 2018, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of XX.X%. VDC's estimate of the growth of the mobile application development platform and tools market is presented in Exhibit 1. Investments in software for mobile management, security, and communications are sizeable but are dwarfed by the sizeable budgets organizations will be spending on development tools and pre-packaged applications going forward.

The need to deliver multiple apps across several popular mobile platforms is the natural progression that is inevitable with expanding mobile deployments. VDC expects this to become the norm for many organizations (particularly multi-national companies as device usage patterns vary dramatically in the EMEA and APAC regions). The cross-platform promise of write-once-run-anywhere has been (and remains) the core value proposition for many of the solutions. However, most recently the messaging from vendors has centered on backend integration with legacy applications and systems (such as database and mainframe data), APIs, and the opening up of platforms to enable developers to user their preferred tool(s) and integrated development environment(s) (IDEs). As shown in Exhibit 3, organizations are beginning to actively engage in custom application development. While XX% of respondents acquire prepackaged applications, this is increasingly difficult for enterprises given the amount of customization they have implemented to their application environments and legacy applications.

XX Commercial in Confidence.
