INTRODUCTION

The global automotive industry is one of the most important sectors of economic growth and revenue. The US was once the largest producer of automotive globally until it was overtaken by China in 2008. Global production of automotive has been steadily increasing and is expected to reach 76 million units in 2015. The percentage of plastics used in the automotive industry has increased significantly, with polyolefins the preferred type of plastics used in automotive manufacture. There has been strong growth in demand for polyolefins in automobiles.

Polypropylene is the most commonly used polyolefin in automotive applications due to its good impact strength, low density, excellent processability, mechanical properties and good dimensional stability. Polyethylene is also used in automotive applications but to a lesser extent.

This study focuses on the use of polyolefins (polypropylene and polyethylene) and the thermoplastic elastomers (TPE-S, TPO and TPV) in automotive applications.
