Abstract

The economic downturn has slowed the growth of the Australian enterprise telephony market in 2008 in calendar Q4 and the deceleration is expected to continue until the end of 2010. Decision makers across customer segments have taken on a ‘wait and see' strategy with reductions to the available capital and the pressure to reduce OPEX. The potentially lucrative SME opportunities have shrunk as a result of the downturn.

Produced annually as the authoritative report in Telsyte' s Market Analysis and Forecast Series, this study provides a detailed investigation and comprehensive analysis of the Australian enterprise telephony market in 2008 and forecast for 2009 to 2013.

Key findings from this study include:

  • Telsyte estimates that the Australian enterprise telephony market was worth $454.3 million in
  • 2008, a 5.9% growth from 2007;
  • Although telephony systems from pre/early Y2K are reaching end of life, Australian businesses are holding off widespread replacement of TDM with IP systems, mainly due to the current economic conditions;
  • With market share of 22.4%, Cisco has regained the number 1 position across enterprise telephony market in 2008 from Nortel;
  • The IP telephony market was worth $286.7 million in 2008, representing 63% of the Australian enterprise telephony market;
  • The key for the next 12 months will be for vendor to ensure that channel partners are knowledgeable on 3rd party applications and the broader ecosystem as well as being technology agnostic;
  • From a top down perspective, there are minimal obvious differences in UC offerings outside of professional services, vendor/channel brand equity and carriage service bundling;
  • Vodafone has launched the Vodafone Business One solution by partnering with Research in Motion (RIM), Cisco and AAPT to provide a FMC proposition for the Australian SME market;
  • Telsyte has identified the need to overhaul cabling as the key inhibitor to the uptake of pure-IP systems, due to the amount of capital required; and
  • Vendors and channels should take a long-term view in positioning themselves for the upside in the SME segment by establishing relationships through the collaboration and conferencing play, which promises immediate and direct ROI, as a point of entry.
