Canada had around 6.6 bnt of proven coal reserves at the end of 2016 and majority of these are of bituminous graded with sub-bituminous and lignite-grade coal accounting for the rest. Majority of these coal reserves are located in the western provinces of British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. The country's coal production decreased by 2.5% over 2015 to around 60 mt in 2016, as a result of a fall in production from major operating mines. The majority of the country's coal originated from Alberta and British Columbia. Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia accounted for a small share of coal production.

Over the forecast period (2017-2021), coal production is projected to increase moderately to reach almost 64 mt in 2021. The moderate increase is supported by upcoming projects, including the Bingay Project and the Groundhog Project in British Columbia, which are scheduled to commence operations in 2019 and 2020 with ore-processing capacities of 2 mt and 0.8 mt, respectively. Canadian coal consumption was an estimated 38.4 mt in 2016, down by 1.7% over 2015, due to the closure of a number of coal-fired power plants. Consumption is expected to fall further over the forecast period to around 36mt in 2021.

Coal exports were almost 31 mt in 2016 and the Asian countries of Japan, China, South Korea, and India accounted for 70% of the total. Canadian coal exports are expected to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of nearly 1.5% over the forecast period to about 34 mt in 2020. Teck Resources Ltd, Westmoreland Coal Company, and TransAlta Corporation (TransAlta) are Canada's largest coal mining companies. Several provincial government departments and agencies govern the Canadian mining industry, and each province has separate laws regulating the industry.
