Global lead reserves were 88.7 Million tonnes (Mt) as of January 2016, with Australia accounting for the largest share with 35Mt or 39.5% of the total, followed by China, Russia, Peru, Mexico, the US, India, Poland, Bolivia, Sweden. Collectively these top 10 countries accounted for 94.6% of the global lead metal reserves.

Global lead mine production is set to grow from 4.57 Million tonnes (Mt) to around 5 Mt by 2020, representing a compound annual growth rate of 2.1%. This can be attributed to the various upcoming lead projects located across Mexico, Russia and Australia.

According to Cliff Smee, Mining Research Specialist - “A major driver of demand for lead is the global automobile industry. Lead is predominantly used in manufacturing lead-acid batteries which are widely consumed in automobiles, and in 2015 global automobile production were 90.7 Million units including, 68.5 Million cars and 22.2 Million commercial vehicles.”

Having said the above, still the global lead mine (or metal content in the ore) production plunged 7.8% to 4.6Mt as production from China declined by a substantial 25.2%, followed by Australia (10.6%) and the US (5.5%). China however stood as the largest producer of lead during the same year; Australia and the US were the second and third largest respectively which was followed by Peru and Mexico among the top five.
