WiGig / IEEE 802.11ad has emerged as one of the most promising Wi-Fi standards in the recent few years with high speed data rates up to 7Gbps operating in the 60 GHz band, according to SAR Insight & Consulting, which also said the market WiGig will open up Wi-Fi to even faster data transfer rates and the opportunity for new and enhanced use cases.
SAR Insight & Consulting's recent study estimates that 2.5 billion WiGig enabled devices will ship in 2020, with rapid growth from 2016 onwards.
“WiGig is not a new technology,” SAR Insight & Consulting Senior Analyst Mohamad Haidar said. “The Wireless Gigabit Alliance was launched back in 2009 to develop specifications and commercialize the technology, and WiGig products have been on the market since 2013.”
“The market has been slow to develop given a lack of compelling use cases and the need for new chipsets to lower cost and drive usage.”
However, in the last few years, development work has been done by OEMs and chip vendors; after a few false starts, 2016 seems to be the year that WiGig finally takes off.
The leading WiGig chipset vendors include semiconductor giants such as Qualcomm and Intel, and focused vendors such as SiBeam (now owned by Lattice Semiconductor) and Peraso Technologies.
Many new products, across a number of sectors, are now adopting WiGig technology. Equipment vendors include Acer, Dell, LeTV, Lenovo, TP Link and many others.
“The recent release of a WiGig enabled smartphone - LeTV, a Chinese smartphone vendor - will help prove use cases and give impetus to leading smartphone vendors - such as Apple and Samsung - to move to add WiGig in the next few years,” SAR Insight & Consulting's Principal Analyst Peter Cooney said. “The release of notebooks with WiGig capabilities from Dell and others is another indication of the rapid adoption of the WiGig technology in various markets.”
Consumer applications will drive initial WiGig adoption but many other markets will also use the technology in the future.
“WiGig is just starting to see the light in the wireless backhaul sector through IgniteNet MetroLinq PTP product (chipsets by Peraso Technologies) but its use is expected to grow rapidly, especially as we get closer to the 5G cellular deployment,” Mohamad said.
In the last couple of years, the technology has started to pick up faster as Qualcomm acquired Wilocity in 2014, and Intel introduced its own WiGig chipset.
Peraso Technologies announced its WiGig chipset release late 2015, while Samsung announced the development of WiGig technology in Q4 2014.
“More than 2.5 billion WiGig enabled devices are expected to ship in 2020, with technology adoption driven mainly by the smartphone and smart TV markets,” Mohamad said.
