The concept of quantum dot solar cells is receiving attention as the technology that can overcome the theoretical limit of current solar cells. Talks on utilizing 3 physical characteristic of quantum dot is currently under process, and it is expected to bring up the efficiency of solar cells to 60% theoretically.

The 3 physical characteristic of quantum dot include:

  • 1. Expansion of absorption region of solar spectrum,
  • 2. Prevention of heat generation through photon emission and
  • 3. Minimization of energy loss through formation of miniband.

This report deals with the physical capabilities of quantum dot solar cells as well as its problems, researches that are mentioned as the solutions, future technology trend as well as the time and efficiency rate it take for the cells to be commercialized.

This reports contains the key patents' trend registered in Korea, China, Europe and United States by 2014 and global research institutes R&D activities.

Current efficiency rates and the required rates for commercialization, as well as the expected date of commerciazliation of compound semiconductor, silicon-based and nano-crystal/core-shell quantum dot solar cells are all included in the report.
