This report covers the process of manufacturing electrodes for lithium ion rechargeable batteries. Lithium ion rechargeable batteries are generally fabricated as follows. The LIB manufacturing process is as follows.

  • ① Electrode fabrication: mixing, coating - drying, roll pressing, and slitting
  • ② Assembly: winding, jelly roll insertion, electrolyte injection, and sealing
  • ③ Inspection and Formation

① Mixing → Coating → Roll Pressing → Slitting (Punching) → Vacuum Drying → ② Assembling → ③ Aging → Degassing → Grading → Packing

Among others, the electrode manufacturing process is comprised of the steps of coating/drying mixing slurry containing active materials, conductors, binders and solvents on the surface of a metal current collector; and roll pressing; and slitting to create an electrode. This report covers the steps of mixing of cathode and anode materials to vacuum drying.

Detailed explanations of the pole plate manufacturing processes currently adopted by incumbent battery makers and equipment suppliers provide the readers a comprehensive guidance on the electrode fabrication process for rechargeable batteries.
