目錄

Abstract

The proliferation of digital content in the home has largely been driven by the popularity of the MP3 audio codec, abundance of digital cameras/camcorders and availability of all types of digital content over broadband connections. The PC has acted thus far as the primary device which aggregates, manages and in some cases, streams content to other PCs or CE devices in the home. The need to manage, aggregate and stream content has led to the development of dedicated Media Server platforms such as NAS Media Servers (Network Attached Storage), Set Top Box Media Servers and High-End Media Servers, along with the PC acting as a Media Server.

Aside from the market need for a centralized server platform, several standards and technologies have enabled this market. The UPnP Forum and Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) have established and published Media Server and Media Renderer technical guidelines based on open standards that define interoperable building blocks for devices based on use case scenarios. These guidelines cover network transport, media codecs/formats, streaming protocols and digital rights management. In addition to these guidelines, stability of media codecs and formats, the proliferation of devices with integrated connectivity solutions, and advanced rendering capabilities and sophisticated middleware/software have enabled the industry to create robust and compelling Media Server platforms.

In almost all published research reports, and in consumer usage cases which have been the basis for the development of media server platforms, portability has been largely overlooked. This study considers the development of an emerging class of Portable Media Servers which S2 Data believes will become a key element in the expansion and further proliferation of Media Server platforms. The report focuses on the current generation of devices which have Media Server-like capabilities, and how these will evolve into full Portable Digital Media Servers. The report will also discuss future feature sets and technologies which will become part of the PDMS platform and ultimately how the market will develop.

While many devices such as cell phones and digital cameras may over time incorporate some media serving functionality, this report focuses on an emerging dedicated class of devices whose primary function is serving, storing and rendering digital content.
