Abstract
The zircon market showed a sharp contraction that started in late 2008 and
lasted for a year. Producers reduced output in order to cut costs and stop an
accumulation of stocks. Consumption started to recover in late 2009,
accelerated in 2010 and continued to grow into 2011. Supply, particularly
from Australia where over 40% originates, did not recover at the same rate and
producers shipped an estimated 0.5Mt from their stocks during 2008-2010. The
tightness in the market together with the drawdown in stocks led to a series
of price rises that started in early 2009. By January 2011, Australian
premium zircon prices were at record levels after growing by 50% compared to
early 2009 and are forecast to continue rising.
