Overview

The structure of the global borates market has undergone significant changes over the last decade. Traditionally the glass industry, fibreglass and borosilicate, accounted for over half of total borate consumption and were the main drivers of the overall market. This is changing because the use of boron in textile-grade fibreglass is under threat, and insulation grade fibreglass is facing competition from lower cost alternatives. This is reducing the importance of the fibreglass market in terms of overall borate consumption and compounded by significant growth in other applications.

Therefore the overall outlook for the boron market is one of slow but steady growth to 2018 as increases in demand for some markets are cancelled out by reductions in others. There are also diverging regional patterns of supply. Production in the Middle East (Turkey) and North America (USA) significantly exceeds regional consumption, and companies in Europe and Asia are large net consumers of borates.

Global capacity expansions are being driven by the increasing reliance of China on imports to meet rising consumption in the face of falling domestic output. Changes in Chinese consumption levels are the most important factor influencing the global market as well as future demand.

Over the last decade, expansions by RTM in the USA, Quiborax in Chile, Eti Mine in Turkey and Manufacturas Los Andes in Argentina, have raised boric acid capacity by over 300,000tpy mainly to supply rising Chinese consumption. The largest future expansion is located in Turkey, where Eti Mine plans to raise capacity for refined borates, while Rio Tinto has announced plans to start production of boric acid and lithium carbonate in Serbia. Other long-term projects are under consideration in South America, Russia and Europe.

The projected amount of boric acid and refined borate capacity, along with associated natural borate supply to support it, is likely to grow at a higher rate than demand to 2018. This may put downward pressure on prices if supplies exceed demand by a significant amount.
