Nickel and cobalt smelting refers to the process of transforming raw nickel and cobalt ores into nickel and cobalt ingots with certain purity. Core products includes electrolytic nickel, high-grade nickel matte, nickel sulphide; mineral nickel, recycled nickel; cobalt, cobalt oxide, ferrocobalt.

Taking a wide view of China's nickel and cobalt industry, we can easily find out that the whole market functions well, with respective economic indicators seeing certain growth. As the important basis for enterprises to develop the raw material procurement, production and marketing plans, the price movements of products are of crucial importance to the production, operation and development planning of enterprises.

China's nickel supply consists of such two parts as newly produced nickel ore concentrate supply that accounts for 72.9% and regenerated nickel that accounts for 27.1%. It can clearly be seen that the regenerated nickel industry lagged behind in China, but it also shows that it has a huge development space. At present, China's regenerated nickel industry will develop into a large-size, professional and environment-friendly industry. The annual output of waste nickel materials from such industries in China as high-temperature alloy, galvanization, battery and regenerated copper electrolysis has been a big number (based on nickel), but the recovery volume of waste nickel in China is relatively small. In addition to direct recycling by enterprises in such industries as high-temperature alloy, galvanization and battery, many markets are formed in distributing areas to recycle waste nickel materials, thus promoting the development of waste nickel recycling.

The downstream of nickel mainly includes such six industries as stainless steel, alloy steel, corrosion resistant alloy, battery, electroplating and chemistry. The nickel consumption of the stainless steel industry accounts for 60% of the total consumption.

Electroplated nickel is mainly used as protective and decorative plating. For the past few years, it has been more and more widely applied in the manufacturing of continuous casting crystallizers, molds on the surface of electronic components, die-casting molds of alloy, aerospace engine parts of complicated shapes and mini-size electronic elements. In electroplating, the processing quantity of electroplated nickel ranks second, only following that of electroplated zinc, and its consumption accounts for about 10% of the total production volume of nickel. At present, it is difficult to find an industry, which does not adopt chemical nickel plating technology. In East Asia and Southeast Region with blooming economy, including China, the application of chemical plating is in the uprising stage and is expected to develop rapidly.

For the past few years, with the increasing global research and development of new energy vehicles, especially hybrid electric vehicles, the use of nickel in the battery industry is worth attention. The total use quantity of nickel in the battery industry is not large, but there are enterprises involved, of which many research and development enterprises are very active.
