Abstract
The Thai telecom market generated $8.0bn in service revenue in 2010. It is a
fast-growing market, increasing by 11.2% in 2010 and 11.3% in 2011, rebounding
from the slowdown in 2009. We expect growth to stabilize over the next few
years however, resulting in a 5.0% CAGR for 2011-2016. Although growth overall
will be slower than that of its peers in Asia- Pacific, mobile data will
perform especially well, with revenue increasing at a 20.4% CAGR for 2011-2016
after increasing by 42.2% in 2011. Hit with capacity constraints from limited
availability of spectrum, mobile operators are investing in building out Wi-Fi
networks to deal with the ever-increasing mobile data load. True highlighted
building out Wi-Fi hotspots as one of its important initiatives in Q4 2011,
and AIS, DTAC, TOT and True are all partnering on Wi-Fi networks in a few
high-traffic shopping areas.
