This document addresses the global market for plastic film capacitors which are a subset of the $15 Billion USD global capacitor market, which is in turn a subset of the $25 billion USD global market for passive electronic components (capacitors, resistors and inductors). A highly fragmented segment of the high-tech global economy. The global plastic film capacitor market is valued at approximately $2.5 billion USD for fiscal year 2011 (ending March 31, 2011) with approximately 20 billion pieces shipped worldwide.

Where Science Meets Money

There are two scientific principles that can be applied to capacitors that ultimately helps in valuation of any given dielectric- this is that capacitance is found in almost every electronic and electrical circuit- this means they are ubiquitous; and that the ability for a capacitor to hold charge is directly proportional to the physical size of the capacitor. If you keep these two basic facts in mind, investment in new technology and capacity expansion becomes much easier. For the plastic film dielectric, capacitance is achieved through the metallization of thin plastic film (OPP, PET, PEN, PPS), which is then rolled tightly around a mandrel, or stacked in sheets to increase available surface area. The unique aspects of plastic film in a capacitor are its 1) self healing capability; and 2) its ability to handle very high voltages.
