Abstract

Considerable pent-up demand exists for off-grid portable power generation solutions that are environmentally friendly and non-toxic. Fuel cells have the unique ability to overcome the weaknesses of incumbent technologies, or provide a solution not achievable by present technologies. Fuel cells are extremely energy efficient and provide significant longer runtimes than batteries, with power being provided either directly, or in hybrid fashion, such as recharging a battery or being combined with a solar module.

Yet the commercialization of fuel cells has repeatedly been delayed, as the technology seeks a viable market. Respecting the challenges unique to the industry, this report conducts a thorough examination of technology trends and provides deep tactical analysis of markets and applications, concluding that fuel cell adoption will not be driven by a single killer application, but instead multiple niche applications will drive the industry, as global demand increases for clean, reliable power. A central thesis of this report is that these applications will be determined mainly by power level capacity.

This Pike Research report provides a comprehensive analysis of vertical markets and applications for micro, macro, and portable power fuel cells, government incentives and funding structures regarding fuel cells, market drivers and inhibitors, and in-depth profiles of key global industry players. Strengths/Weaknesses/Opportunities/Threats (SWOT) analysis is included for each of the power level segments identified by Pike Research, including: sub 20W, sub 100W, sub 500W, sub 2 kW, and sub 7 kW. The report also includes detailed market forecasts through 2017 that realistically quantify the alignment of fuel cell technologies with relevant applications.

Key questions addressed:

  • Specific fuel cell applications and market size for each power level segment
  • The present pricing structure, unit demand, and robust market forecasts for each fuel cell market as defined by power level
  • The technology type best suited for portable power fuel cell systems at different power levels
  • Who will be the early OEM adopters of fuel cells?
  • SWOT analysis of each fuel cell power level: 20W, 100W, 500W, 2 kW, and 7 kW
  • Projected power requirements, cost, and value proposition regarding fuel cell technology for military applications
  • Top 10 manufacturers for each of 13 key target markets

Who needs this report?
