Natural Gas Vehicles: Market Analysis and Global Forecasts for CNG and LNG Cars, Trucks, and Buses
|

Abstract
Natural gas vehicles (NGVs) have been available to varying degrees since the
1970s (and earlier in some parts of the world). Despite this long history, NGV
adoption varies significantly from region to region. While North America and
parts of Western Europe and Asia Pacific see NGVs as mostly commercial
vehicles, there are several countries that have significant numbers of natural
gas vehicles for consumer markets in addition to fleets. The primary growth
drivers in these countries, as well as the smaller regions, are the economics
of less expensive natural gas, the reduction of oil imports, the environmental
benefits of lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and the availability of
vehicle and refueling stations.
Pike Research has conducted an in-depth assessment of the opportunities and
challenges facing the 12.6 million unit NGV market, which we forecast will
expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.9% to reach 19.9 million
vehicles by 2016. Natural gas refueling station development is not expected to
achieve the same growth rate, but will reach nearly 26,000 stations worldwide
by 2016.
This Pike Research report provides a comprehensive examination of natural gas
vehicle technologies, compressed and liquefied natural gas shipping and
storage, governmental incentives and regulations, and key drivers of market
growth. The report includes forecasts of NGV sales, refueling infrastructure,
and natural gas usage through 2016 for light-duty vehicles and medium/heavy
duty trucks and buses. Key market players are also profiled.
Key questions addressed:
- How large will the NGV market be globally?
- What are the key drivers of growth in the NGV market?
- Which regions are the key markets for NGVs?
- What are the key countries for NGV sales growth?
- Why are those countries strong NGV markets while others are not?
- What is the difference between dual fuel and bi-fuel NGVs?
- What is the outlook for NGV growth within various vehicle segments?
- What are the key storage tank and engine technologies being used in NGVs?
- How many NGV refueling stations are there, and how fast will they grow
over the next 5-6 years?
- How much natural gas will be used by the transportation sector globally?
- What are other alternative fuels that compete with natural gas?
- Who are the key industry players in the NGV market?
- What are the government incentives to purchase NGVs?
- What environmental regulations pertain to NGVs?
