Seven Asian flexible packaging markets have been identified by PCI consultants as ‘emerging' and worth profiling in some detail:
India's flexible packaging market, which is the fourth largest in the world, is forecast to grow by 17% per annum over the next five years. The industry has been attracting inward investment via acquisition and greenfield projects from a number of multinational converters, notably Huhtamaki, Amcor and Constantia.
Indonesia's flexible packaging market, which is the sixth largest in the world, is forecast to grow by 8% per annum over the next five years. The industry has a number of significant domestic converters including some multinational involvement.
Kazakhstan is by far the most prosperous of the Central Asian Republics that were formerly part of the Soviet Union. Flexible packaging demand, currently largely served by imports, is forecast to grow by around 8% per annum over the next five years, sustained by a strong and growing food processing sector.
Although currently small, Myanmar's flexible packaging market is projected to grow by more than 20% per annum over the next five years, underpinned by major inward direct investment by multinational packers.
Pakistan's flexible packaging market is growing by over 10% per annum. The annual spend on flexible packaging at around US$3 per capita is amongst the lowest in world, which illustrates the huge potential for flexible packaging in this emerging market.
Thailand's US$850 million flexible packaging market is forecast to grow by 6% per annum over the next five years, underpinned by a strong and heavily export-oriented food processing sector.
Boosted by inward investments by multinational packers, Vietnam ranks amongst the world's most buoyant major flexible packaging markets with growth approaching 20% per annum.
