Abstract

When Pioneer last researched and wrote about the Latin American submarine fiber optic cable market in 2003, the industry as a whole was in the doldrums and Latin American economies had been hit hard by a global economic recession. Five years later and the picture could not be more different. The global submarine cable industry is in the midst of another construction boom and confidence has returned to key Latin American markets to the extent that capacity upgrades are occurring on the major submarine fiber optic trunk routes, new branches are being added to existing systems, and new construction projects are being discussed.

With this change in market conditions comes renewed interest in Latin America from service providers, equipment suppliers and installers, potential investors and associated financial institutions. In response to this, Pioneer has made a detailed survey of countries in Latin America gathering data on the general political and economic conditions, the structure and developments within the national telecom market, and regulatory issues. This data is collated and presented in detailed standardized country profiles with a view to understanding the drivers of growth in demand for submarine fiber optic capacity in Latin America.

Countries covered by this report are:

  • Argentina
  • Belize
  • Brazil
  • Chile
  • Colombia
  • Costa Rica
  • Ecuador
  • El Salvador
  • French Guiana
  • Guatemala
  • Guyana
  • Honduras
  • Mexico
  • Nicaragua
  • Panama
  • Peru
  • Suriname
  • Uruguay
  • Venezuela

Similarly, Pioneer looks at the supply side by providing comprehensive profiles of every existing and planned submarine fiber optic cable in the region.

Cables covered in this report are:

  • Americas-1
  • Americas-2
  • ARCOS
  • Atlantis-2
  • Brazil Domestic 1 & 2
  • CFX-1
  • Colombia-Panama Festoon
  • Columbus-2
  • Ixchel
  • GlobeNet
  • Guyana-Trinidad-Brazil-Suriname
  • Maya-1
  • Pan American
  • Pan American Crossing
  • SAm - 1 (formerly known as Emergia)
  • South American Crossing
  • Southern Caribbean Fiber Extension
  • Unisur
  • Venezuela-Cuba

Using the information from the country profiles together with statistics from the ITU and other credible sources, Pioneer then applies its proprietary methodology to assess and forecast the supply-demand balance for submarine cable capacity in each Latin American country until 2020.

This analysis therefore provides the reader not only with an understanding of the growth potential in the region and associated drivers but it also provides a forecast of when upgrades and construction of new submarine fiber optic systems are likely to be required.
