Abstract
SYNOPSIS
There are many initiatives underway in the U.S. to promote residential energy
management and conservation. Electric utilities are deploying Advanced
Metering Infrastructures (AMI), which promise benefits such as load shedding
and the ability to accommodate alternative energy sources and pinpoint outages.
For consumers, benefits could include reduced energy bills, enhanced comfort
and convenience, and a reduction in their carbon footprint. This report is a
reference book of companies developing the technologies, deploying the systems
and building business models that capitalize on bringing the smart grid to the
smart home.
“A key component of AMI is the smart meter, which is a digital meter
capable of processing and reporting usage data to providers and households via
two-way communication between meters and utility offices,” said Bill
Ablondi, Director, Home Systems Research, Parks Associates.
“Utilities see the benefit of upgrading the grid, and consumers are
growing more conscious of their energy consumption. Add in incentives from the
government, and you have three strong drivers that will boost deployment and
innovation in this market.”
