As China's telecom market has developed, it has become both a leading player,
and the largest market, in the global telecom sector. China's entrance into 2G
mobile communications began over 10 years ago with China's two mobile
operators choosing different 2G standards for their networks. China Mobile
chose the European-developed GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication)
standard when it began construction of its nationwide mobile network in 1995,
and commercial services were launched in 1996. China Unicom chose two mobile
standards, both GSM and CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access). China Unicom's
GSM network was also constructed for commercial use in 1995 and its CDMA
network began commercial use in 2002. Both China Mobile and China Unicom's GSM
networks have been upgraded to GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) networks.
China Unicom's CDMA networks were upgraded to CDMA2000 1X networks.
In this section, Norson will take a close look at the development of 2G, 3G
and “beyond 3G” standards in China, analyzing the situation of
both GSM and CDMA networks in China as well as the relationship between WiMAX
and 3G.
