FSS industry revenues up 5.8% between 2009 and 2010, plus will see similar gains in coming ten years
The latest edition of NSR's industry leading assessment of commercial
satellite supply and demand trends indicates that the sector continues to see
steady demand growth as well increasing revenues. The Global Assessment of
Satellite Supply & Demand 8th Edition study found that total revenues from
capacity leasing were up 5.8% in the last year, exceeding US$10.1 billion as
of the end of 2010. As historically has been the case, video services such a
distribution, direct-to-home (DTH), and contribution & OUTV services dominated
capacity leasing and accounted for fully two-thirds of industry revenues in
the last year. In NSR's estimate, video will be one of the prime drivers in
pushing commercial leasing revenues to grow at an average annual rate of about
5% for the coming ten years.
Yet, revenue from many classes of predominately data-type applications such as
VSAT, mobility, backhaul, and gov/mil clients could see a faster rate of
growth than video and net nearly as much real revenues gains in the coming ten
years as the video side of the industry. Further, new segments are emerging.
In 2010, NSR estimated that revenues from leased widebeam Ka-band and High
Throughput Satellite (HTS) capacity only accounted for about 1% of the total
industry revenues. However by 2020, these two segments could account for 10%
of all revenues and will see some of the fastest rates of demand growth for
applications such as broadband satellite access services, enterprise data and
mobility applications.
This is also supported by what NSR expects will be a tempering of supply
growth, notably for classic C-band capacity as well as for Ku-band capacity in
well developed markets as some of the industry growth migrates from these
heritage frequencies to widebeam Ka-band, notably in the enterprise data and
gov/mil segments, and HTS capacity for broadband access, commercial mobility,
backhaul and enterprise VSAT. Still, C- and Ku-band should increase
conservatively in the coming ten years. Widebeam Ka-band supply will be more
limited; however, the availability of HTS capacity is projected to explode by
2020.
