Northern Sky Research的報告書中,預測2020年之前利用衛星線路的無線高速通訊市場將成長為19億美元的市場規模。

依據該報告書,衛星利用的無線高速通訊,從發展中國家的田園地區以往固定地上塔,轉移到觀光船、集裝箱船、民航機等流動性平台。

該報告書的執筆者Northern Sky Research的上級分析者Jose Del Rosario敘述:「全球利用衛星線路的無線高速通訊市場,一般認為2020年時將成長到19億美元,為現在6億4,000萬美元的3倍以上。」。「全球加入無線服務者的75%以上都使用地上技術,不過利用衛星線路的無線高速通訊市場也會繼續擴大。流動性平台不僅增補固定通信的涵蓋區域,亦為在移動性被視為有必要的地區帶來市場機會。」

然固定地上塔尚有市場機會。從設備投資、運用維持費面來選擇衛星方式的做法在利基市場雖然每況愈下,透過高容許量衛星(HTS)等新計畫的加入,再加上新的O3b登場,使市場變革具有可能性。這樣的新計畫與固定地上塔市場的再評估有關,或許還帶給整個市場強有力的原動力。

本報告書預測利用衛星的高速通訊將從2010年不滿3萬台到2020年增加到8萬5,000台。2010年,流動性平台僅為已完成設置的無線基地之20%,然推定2020年將佔55%以上。
