Abstract

109 payloads were carried by 74 launch missions worldwide over the past 12 months, down from 2009 by 6.5%. These launches were largely into the "truly steady" Geostationary Earth Orbit (37.5%) and "relatively fickle" Low Earth Orbit (40%) although MEO, HEO, SSO and others also saw at least a couple of launches last year. The number of payloads took a dip compared to the four-year average of 115 keeping in line with the downward cycle that the satellite industry is currently witnessing.

For the industry insider, it is imperative that top line figures be backed with insight especially for a market where payloads manufactured or launch contracts awarded are not always a "free and fair" bid. The industry operates in a complex environment, and one can find ample projections in the public domain. Building on these, NSR' s "bottom up" research methodology picks up Micro-Trends and analyzes their Macro-Effects. Databases for Satellites Manufactured, Launch Events, Bus Configurations, Transponders and Earth Observation Missions are meticulously developed over a year-round Secondary Research process. This is complemented with a Primary Research effort wherein a team of NSR analysts has contacted every major Launch Provider and Satellite Manufacturer. Interviews with these decision-makers have been held face-to-face, over the telephone and even both ways.

As with the launch and manufacturing market, there is more to this report than meets the eye. For GEO telecom satellites, geographical regions are presented not just by Region of Operator but also by the Region of Service of the satellite. NSR has collated launch history right from Sputnik up until Yahsat-1A (Q1 2011) and has also forecasted every data element for the next fifteen years until 2025. These forecasts are then broken down by segmentation according to Client, Orbit Region and Application as is relevant. Keeping in mind the relevance to those ordering and those launching satellites, both Year of Order and Year of Launch are used as baselines. Finally, as with every effort NSR, the report goes beyond the numbers to look at their impact on the industry and marketplace giving the reader the reasoning behind the raw data. NSR' s analysts take a stand on where the market is headed, and contentious issues like falling launch costs, ITAR workarounds and the feasibility of the manufacturer-turned-service-provider model are all discussed at length.

Comparison with Public Domain Projections

NSR' s Global Satellite Manufacturing and Launch Markets study is built on the collation of public and private domain databases, but that is where the similarity with other industry reports ends. Interviews have been conducted with every major manufacturer and launch provider in nations as diverse as Japan, India, China, Russia, Germany, France, Canada, and the United States, among others. This gives the reader more than just the intuitive "Super-Power-Skewed" analysis and highlights the evolution of smaller launchers and the potential they hold for the industry.

Most satellite manufacturers and launch providers have weathered the Economic Recession relatively unscathed, but it is difficult to ignore the Bankruptcies, Back-to-Back Failures, Supplier Consolidation and Natural Calamities whose impact is yet to be fully realized. NSR' s Global Satellite Manufacturing and Launch Markets report crunches the numbers widely tracked by the industry, segments the data with the reader in mind and adds company-specific insight that goes beyond press releases.

Extensive Market Forecasts

Raising the bar for forecasts with this report, NSR presents parameters most relevant to both Satellite Manufacturing and Launch industries:

  • Satellite numbers are forecasted and broken down by orbit and application along with segmentation by Launch Mass and Payload Power based on expected order date AND launch date.
  • Launch Vehicles are segmented by their Launch Capacity and Manifest to allow those procuring contracts for future satellites to understand evolutionary trends.
  • Revenue Forecasts are segmented into those from Manufacturing and those from Launch services with further segmentation as relevant.
  • Regional Forecasts are segmented by the region of funding allow a unique insight into the working of International Telecommunication Satellite Operators that are responsible for the majority of procurement orders.
  • Communication and Earth Observation satellites are given further importance by touching upon mission specifications, transponder availability etc.

Each of these figures is forecasted for a period of fifteen years from 2011 until 2025 for each of the five regions across the world. A complete analysis of the figures in the Excel data file is contained in the body of the report.

Primary Questions Addressed in this Report Include:

  • What are the Market Trends in each of the five regions that will shape the Manufacturing and Launch markets over the next fifteen years?
  • What are the key indicators that make certain manufacturer and launcher configurations more promising than others for satellite operators?
  • What impact will Bankruptcies, Failures Consolidation and Calamities have on the manufacturing and launch markets around the globe?
  • What are the trends in terms of Satellites Manufactured, Bus Configurations, Launch Vehicles and Revenues for manufacturing and launch providers the world over?
  • How are manufacturing and launch markets in terms of satellites, vehicles and revenues projected to grow/decline over the next fifteen years?
  • How are specific parameters such as payload power and launch mass (among others) projected to grow/decline over the next fifteen years?
  • How are contentious issues of ITAR regulations, manufacturers-turned-service providers and Launch costs expected to impact both "Big" and "Small" players?
  • How are each of the regions expected to gain/lose importance and/or maintain their stronghold on manufacturing and launch markets?
  • What are the conclusions one can draw from market indicators for each individual market?
