Abstract

Wireless subscriber growth has been nothing less than stunning with the ITU projecting at least 5 billion mobile users by the end of 2010 of the globe' s 6.8 billion people. Satellite backhaul has gained from the benefits of this expansion; however, there are concerns that the remaining addressable market may quickly diminish as terrestrial backhaul solutions continue to gain ground in underserved areas.

The next few years will determine whether satellite technology will be a big part of the final push to connect the unserved or whether the wireless industry will find other means that are less expensive and thus more practical in backhauling the remaining pockets of demand left around the globe.

Although satellite backhaul solutions benefited from the wireless industry' s surge, the rate of satellite growth is hardly at the same pace. The future challenge for the satellite industry is thus quite clear: provide a compelling, sustainable and long-lasting value proposition, at the right price, or be squeezed out of the wireless backhaul business over time.

The addressable market, which is generally not the remaining 1.8 billion people due to inherent economic conditions that restrain wireless adoption, needs creative ideas and an aggressive market push.

Moreover, emerging end user applications and platforms are increasingly complex and bandwidth intensive and will undoubtedly affect wireless networks significantly. In building a business proposition and in crafting growth strategies over the long term, the satellite industry will have to navigate through these developments and once again carve its niche. This may still work in terms of ensuring long term viability, but there are pitfalls as well. More importantly, emerging opportunities can provide higher revenue streams and better ROI to justify technology developments.

In this latest NSR study, the emerging wireless industry landscape is analyzed. The role satellite systems play and could potentially provide a unique fit apart from its traditional backhaul function, will likewise be explored. Strategies that could increase service "stickiness" and permanence will be outlined, given the emerging user requirements and network limitations that are anticipated to take hold.

Specific satellite BTS forecasts for wireless technology platforms are provided per region. The evolution or move towards IP, the impact of high throughout satellites (HTS), ecosystem development and emerging end user requirements are also given special consideration. Finally, a strategic component for regional targeting is provided in order to specifically address the intention of how to cash-in on the successes of the wireless industry.

The NSR Difference

This 4th Edition report builds on NSR' s body of work through insights that have been gained as well as plans that have been disclosed in targeting the wireless backhaul market. The research gives the reader a realistic outlook of market and technology trends that affect mobile subscriber take-up, which then feed into the role and place of satellite platforms. The report provides an honest assessment of legacy FSS systems that have been the technology choice of backhaul engineers, while providing an analysis of high throughout satellite (HTS) solutions. This value proposition is scrutinized and its future role in the complex interplay of technology choices is determined. Strategic recommendations are offered in order to fully leverage the strengths each platform offers the marketplace.

Those looking for the bottom line can expect to find both qualitative and quantitative elements for each technology, highlighting and examining their unique and compelling value proposition as they address traffic needs while being subject to stringent ROI benchmarks.

By segmenting both the 2009 baseline and the 2010-2019 forecasts by equipment type and space segment category, the reader is able to navigate this market, which is both promising and risky, and determine the best course of action and strategic direction to undertake for areas of growth and future impact.

Finally, this 4th Edition study provides expected long term trends that will affect the entire wireless business for current developments that include the introduction and perhaps the proliferation of bandwidth intensive, complex devices that could end up in the hands of developing country users, and creative payment plans that enable penetration in lower income groups.
