Abstract
The European electrophysiology (EP) mapping and ablation device market -
comprising sales of EP lab systems as well as diagnostic and ablation
catheters in France, Germany, Italy, and the UK - was valued over $360 million
in 2011 and will expand through 2016, driven primarily by rising EP procedure
volumes. Growth will be driven primarily by an aging population, an increase
in atrial fibrillation (AF) treatment volumes, increased physician confidence
and proficiency in performing ablations, and technological innovation allowing
for better clinical outcomes and faster procedure times. Market value will,
however, continue to be limited by the enduring popularity of pharmaceutical
treatments, although European guidelines are anticipated to change to
designate ablation procedures as a first-line treatment option. Moreover,
recent health care budget constraints have led to an increasingly
cost-conscious environment, resulting in the possibility of increased
reprocessing practices in the European countries. Another significant limiter
is the low number of electrophysiologists available to meet demand, a
consequence of a steep learning curve and long training periods. Nevertheless,
growth in the European EP mapping and ablation device market will be strong
through 2016.
