Abstract
Nonvascular stents - comprising ureteral, biliary and pancreatic, esophageal,
colonic and duodenal/pyloric, bronchial and tracheal, and prostatic stents -
are used in minimally invasive treatments for a variety of indications. Demand
for these devices will be driven by the benefits of minimally invasive
treatments, including less pain, faster recovery, and shorter hospital stays
(and therefore lower health care costs). In addition, many of the conditions
these stents can treat are becoming more common as the elderly - who are more
susceptible to these conditions - grow as a proportion of the overall US
population. In terms of competitors, a range of companies are active in this
space including large multinationals, smaller competitors, and single-product
start-ups. Key competitive strategies will center around product improvements,
especially to reduce patient complications; increasing the use of
premium-priced products, such as self-expanding metal stents; and training
more physicians to place nonvascular stents, especially newer types.
