Abstract

The US urological device market will experience robust growth, largely fueled by expansion in the urinary incontinence (UI) device segment. This particular market represented the largest segment in 2009 and will experience the highest growth through 2014. Reimbursement changes that took effect in 2008 will continue to create significant unit growth in the intermittent catheter segment of the UI device market, which will fuel revenue expansion. Additionally, the desire among hospitals to reduce catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) will support sales of anti-infective Foley catheters, which are priced at a premium. The vaginal slings segment of the UI device market will also experience strong growth through 2014, driven by the demand for new, premium-priced minimally invasive fixationless vaginal slings, which provide benefits such as high efficacy and reduced patient recovery periods. Like the UI device market, the stone management, prostate cancer, and benign prostatatic hyperplasia (BPH) device markets will all be driven by the growing preference for minimally invasive treatment options. Physicians and patients prefer minimally invasive procedures because of the fast recovery times, shorter hospital stays, and reduced pain associated with these procedures. Despite competition from pharmaceuticals that treat conditions such as UI, kidney stones, and BPH, the US urological device market will experience rapid growth through 2014.

因2008年4月Medicare修改償還制度,每月導管償還對象數從到現在為止的4件擴大到200件。之後2年,因患者轉換成單次使用處方,促使市場擴大。然常使用間歇式導管的大部分患者覺得迄今多年使用標準且可再利用的導管現在依然容易使用,故該市場還殘留大幅成長的可能性。這些患者每月只使用4∼5個導管。

因其堅固的營業力,Coloplast於2009年時佔有50%以上的市場,C.R. Bard、Astra Tech、Rusch、Hollister則共同分享此區塊剩餘的部分。作為處方,為指定使用特定製造商的產品時,須與醫療服務提供商建構適當的關係。此外,為推銷產品給終端顧客,亦須與銷售業者建構關係。市場上大戶獨佔與醫療服務提供商及銷售業者建構關係的機會,卻成為小規模企業要進入、或在該市場成功上的障礙。
