The Japanese electrophysiology (EP) mapping and ablation device market -
comprising EP diagnostic catheters, EP ablation catheters, and EP long
introducer sheaths - will experience strong growth through 2014. The medical
community' s focus on treating atrial fibrillation (AF) will increase because
AF is a risk factor for other conditions such as stroke, and there is growing
evidence that ablations can successfully treat this arrhythmia. EP procedure
volumes will expand as a result. The aging Japanese population, which is
associated with a greater risk of cardiac disease, will also contribute to
procedure volume growth. The introduction of advanced EP ablation catheter
technology, which is safer and more effective, will drive revenues in this
market over the forecast period because these advanced devices are often
premium priced. Despite these drivers, the market will be limited by
reimbursement cuts made by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare
(MHLW) to ensure that the average selling prices of EP mapping and ablation
devices in Japan are within a reasonable range compared to those in the US,
UK, Germany, and France. The overall effect of these drivers and limitations
will be steady market gains through 2014.
