The commercial aircraft cabin interior market is projected to grow with a CAGR of more than 6% during the forecast period, (2021 - 2026).

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a decline in air passenger traffic, which has forced several airlines to cancel aircraft orders or postpone delivery since 2020. The IATA predicts that passenger traffic is anticipated to return to the pre-COVID level by 2024. Nevertheless, with the recovery in passenger traffic in 2021 as compared to that of 2020, some airlines have started ordering and taking deliveries of new aircraft, which is expected to support the growth of the commercial aircraft cabin interior market. Also, with several aircraft grounded, several airlines have opted to refurbish their cabin interiors to restructure their cabin class offerings and introduce several newer generation cabin solutions to attract customers.

Airlines, in order to enhance the passenger experience, are installing new and advanced cabin interior systems, like mood lighting, in-flight live streaming, touchless in-flight solutions, and newer generation seats, that are embedded with smart sensors to manually control seat pressure, tension, temperature, and movement using an app on the phone, among others. Furthermore, the refurbishment and modernization plans for the aging fleet of airlines are also expected to generate demand for the cabin interior market, during the forecast period.

Key Market Trends

Aircraft Seats Segment Held the Largest Market Share in 2020

In segmentation by product type, the aircraft seats segment held the largest market share in 2020. The recovery in the aircraft deliveries is expected to support the growth of the seat line fits in the coming years. Aircraft seat manufacturers are also collaborating with aircraft OEMs to develop innovative seating modules. In April 2021, Airbus announced the introduction of Airspace design on narrow-body aircraft that offers a higher level of passenger comfort featuring full-flat business seats and wider economy seats comparable to its wide-body cabin products. The new cabin design are first installed onboard Airbus A321LR aircraft delivered to JetBlue in April 2021. The new design includes VantageSOLO seats, which are described as fully flatbed developed and designed specifically for single-aisle aircraft. On the other hand, airlines are also focusing on cabin modernization programs, including retrofitting the cabins with better seats to provide the passengers with comfort and luxury, to enhance their passenger experience. Major airlines like Emirates, American Airlines, Singapore Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Aeroflot, and Qantas Airways are some of the airlines that have recently retrofitted or have given contracts to retrofit the seat modifications on board some of their fleets. In August 2021, Aeroflot unveiled its first long-range Boeing 777 aircraft with retrofitted cabin. The cabin is configured with 28 Super Diamond NG seats with sliding doors in Business class, 24 seats in the Comfort class and 375 seats in the Economy class. All these seats include high-quality jacquard upholstery. The airline plans to operate the retrofitted Boeing 777 on all popular international and domestic routes. By end of 2021, Aeroflot plans to refurbish the cabin interior on two more aircraft. Such developments are expected to drive the growth of the segment during the forecast period.

Asia-Pacific to Grow with the Highest CAGR During the Forecast Period

Asia-Pacific is expected to be the major market for the commercial aircraft cabin interiors during the forecast period, due to the growing demand for commercial aircraft from the region. Though the recovery of international passenger traffic in the Asia-Pacific continues to lag the rest of the world due to strict border restrictions, a stronger domestic recovery is anticipated to help the commercial aviation sector in the region. Even during the year 2020, over a quarter of all deliveries of Airbus went to the Asia-Pacific region, signifying a better recovery of the market from the region. During the forecast period, the demand from the LCCs is expected to drive the orders for new commercial aircraft in the region. With a strong domestic market, airlines in China have started to achieve cash breakeven. As a result, Chinese airlines are expected to take deliveries of new aircraft and invest in cabin interior modernization in the coming years. In August 2021, Cathay Pacific Airways has introduced new full cabin 4K ultra-high-definition in-flight entertainment (IFE) screens across its new fleet of Airbus A321neo aircraft, to enhance the passenger experience. On the other hand, the passenger traffic in India is also expected to recover fast, driven by the huge domestic demand. As of September 2021, airlines in India are operating domestic flights at around 85% of their pre-COVID levels. The Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo took delivery of 44 aircraft in 2020, only two less than that of 2019. Similarly, the aviation industries in other countries in the region are also expected to recover due to a large domestic demand, thereby propelling the growth of the commercial market in Asia-Pacific in the years to come.

Competitive Landscape

The commercial aircraft cabin interior market is highly fragmented with many companies taking significant market share in 2020, as there are broad ranges of products involved. Some of the prominent players in the market are Safran SA, Collins Aerospace (Raytheon Technologies Corporation), Honeywell International Inc., JAMCO Corporation, and RECARO Holding GmbH. Though inflight hygiene remained a major concern for several passengers even before the Covid-19 pandemic, the Covid-19 pandemic has increased the passenger safety concerns. Hence, players in the market are investing in the development of new technologies that can help improve sanitization, including UV light, antimicrobial coating, and other technologies that can be implemented as part of the cabin design to ensure the sanity of the passengers. Also, players are looking into new materials and interior designs that can be easily disinfected to facilitate a safe and sanitary journey. Such focus on the innovation of new products will help the companies to increase their market presence during the forecast period.
