The global market for VNA and PACS was estimated to be worth USD 2,930.2 million, in the year 2015. It poised to reach USD 4,133.0 million by the end of 2021, growing at an estimated CAGR of 5.9% during the forecast period of 2016-2021. PACS, as the name indicates is a technology for storage (archival) of medical images like the MRI scans. But unlike the conventional storage, PACS directly integrates with the medical imaging equipment. Due to its direct integration, PACS acquires the images directly from the equipment in real time and stores them in a secure server and makes them accessible as and when required through its communication protocols. The uniqueness of PACS is in its ease of access, as PACS is a connected system it is possible to access the images from anywhere.

All the PACS store the medical images as per the DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) standard to maintain uniformity. Despite following DICOM standard, every PACS has its own internal formats to store data and its inherent proprietary methods to store image presentation states and key image notes. Due to this, transferring the data from PACS built by one vendor to PACS built by other vendor is not possible. Even connecting and integrating two PACS (used in two departments of same hospital) made by the same vendor is also very difficult which makes data synchronization/seamless integration at an organization's level very difficult. Other than this, PACS doesn't support any non-DICOM data which also happens to be huge limitation of PACS. VNA is an application engine that has been developed with the purpose of resolving all the limitations associated with PACS thus facilitating data migration and seamless integration among different PACS. To achieve this, VNA is placed between the medical device and PACS so that the data passes through VNA before reaching PACS. VNA converts all the data into one uniform format (irrespective of how it was before) and then sends it to the PACS for archiving. VNA uses several different protocols to achieve this and they include; DICOM migration, prefetch-based DICOM migration, medium migration, and non-DICOM migration. Due to the use of so many protocols, the VNA can process most forms of imaging data produced by diagnostic imaging devices.

Due to the nature of its use, the VNA market is entirely dependent on the PACS market and the growth in VNA market is directly proportional to the growth of PACS market but not vice versa. Another important aspect related to VNA and PACS market is the fact that both VNA and PACS are an add on to the diagnostic imaging equipment (which are mostly capital equipment's and are not replaced frequently) and the initial purchase of VNA and PACS comes with assured free updates for several years which in turn results in long product life cycle. Along with this, the introduction of VNA has made it very practical to use even very old PACS (long after their free upgrading is complete) without any issues of compatibility, this is further adding to the life cycle of PACS. Due to this long product life cycle, the new sales of VNA and PACS are greatly limited after the initial installation.

Due to the increasing disease awareness, the use of diagnostic imaging is continuously increasing which is resulting in generation of more and more imaging data for archiving and this in turn is increasing the demand for universalization of medical image archiving, demand for storage of all formats of medical data. This combined with reducing data storage costs, high level integration with Electronic Health Records (EHR) industry, compatibility of VNA with older data archival systems are driving the VNA and PACS market. Whereas, the concerns regarding the effects of long term data availability on the decisions of service providers along with other factors like long product life cycle which reduces the need for replacement and the dependency of VNA and PACS sales on capital equipment sales are acting as barriers to market growth.

Integration of VNA and PACS into the diagnostic imaging equipment needs connecting some specialized hardware to the diagnostic imaging equipment. This hardware is called as imaging modality and it is specific to each type of diagnostic imaging equipment. Hence, the VNA and PACS market can be segmented based on imaging modality into Angiography, Computed Radiography, Computed Tomography, Digital Fluoroscopy, Digital Radiography, MRI, Nuclear Medicine and Ultra-Sound. Among these, Computed Radiography and Digital radiography are the largest market segments with a combined market share of about 25% in the year 2014. Along with imaging modalities, the VNA and PACS market can be segmented based on the products into PACS, VNA Software's, Data Storage Solutions and Data Centers.

Even though the imaging modality is required to be installed on the actual diagnostic imaging equipment. The server in which the VAN and PACS are installed and the data is stored need not be installed on site. So based on the mode in which the VNA and PACS services are delivered, the VNA and PACS market can be segmented into On-Site (Premise), Hybrid (combination of onsite and cloud) and Cloud Hosted.
