The global automotive electric actuator market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 12.95% till 2020. Automotive actuators have evolved from mechanical actuators with manual winding windows and seat adjustments, to electronic throttle body, electronic EGR system, electronic brake system, power seats, and active grill shutter. The trend of engine downsizing (especially for passenger vehicles), and increasingly stringent fuel efficiency norms in developing countries are the critical factors fuelling the growth of the automotive electric actuators market in the forecast period. The players from the North America and Europe are expected to dominate the global market for automotive electric actuators with a market share of around 65% as of 2015.

The current trend in the automotive market is the technology advancement in the automotive actuators, to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the various functional component in the vehicle. Electric actuators are more compact, require lower voltage, deliver higher torque and generate less heat. Electric actuators use a power source, such as a battery, to run the actuator. They usually include intricate electrical circuit to program, when the actuator operates. Electronic Throttle Valve by Continental is an actuator for the control of the intake air on combustion engines, available as intelligent actuator (Smart ACV) or with integrated position sensor for external position control (ACV-S) critical to meet fuel efficiency targets. In combination with EGR systems, the valve provides control of the intake manifold pressure of diesel engines for precise control of the EGR ratio improving the EGR systems to meet the stringent emission legislation.

The primary objective for the advent of automotive actuator is to reduce CO2 emissions from vehicles of all classes. The intelligent sensors and actuators applied in most of the critical vehicle components, in conjunction with advanced engine management systems, make it possible to develop low CO2 drives. Electric actuators are cost-effective than their hydraulic and pneumatic counterparts. Electric actuators have a cleaner, simpler, and more energy-efficient power transmission. The integration of electric actuator in a vehicle is easier with programmable controls, and maintenance is minimized with no parts replacement with lubrication required only in extreme conditions.

The market is segmented on the basis of application, vehicle type and geography. Among application type, throttle and brake actuator generated the highest market occupying more than 72% of the market as of 2015. Among vehicle type, passenger cars due to their huge global market, would continue to dominate the market with more than 75% share over the forecast period. Continental, Hella, Delphi are some of the leaders in the global automotive actuator market.
