Abstract
A focus in the German market, since MMD last reviewed convergence in 2007, has
been on deploying broadband using various channels, such as DSL and cable to
extend coverage to a wider section of the population. Rapid growth in
broadband availability over the last three years has resulted in the
penetration rate of fixed connections now exceeding 50% of households and 30%
of the population. The government has now set a target of a minimum 50 Mbps
broadband availability to 75% of German households by 2014.
Competition in broadband supply has resulted in prices that have contributed
to this rapid growth. Mobile has been less emphasised as a feature of
convergent propositions as a result of the focus of the players on the fixed
broadband market.
Germany already has LTE available in some areas, with broadband propositions
based on the high-speed capabilities of this technology - although to date
these are for fixed, rather than mobile, use. Maturity in fixed broadband
combined with such increases in mobile capability are set to bring mobility
more into convergence focus over the next few years.
This report examines the current situation in Germany and draws conclusions
about where competition will be concentrated in the near-term future.
